Background

Council adopted the Municipality's current Municipal Planning Strategy in 1997, and the Province approved it the same year. The assumptions, theories, and trends of the early to mid 1990s guided the development of the planning documents. Many things have changed over the years and it is generally time to undertake a review of the Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS), the Land-Use By-law (LUB), and the Subdivision By-law (SUB). One of the biggest changes was that in 2009, the Municipality approved an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP). Developed after extensive public consultation and with the involvement of many community partners, the ICSP is a vision document for the entire community. It sets forth the communities' goals and objectives related to the 4 pillars of sustainability. In 2010 an implementation plan was completed which examines the goals for each pillar and outlines the actions that the Municipality and the community partners should take to implement the vision. The ICSP is a broad vision document and its implementation relies on the use of policies and programs of the Municipality as well as the broader community.

At the Municipal level, the Municipality's Planning Documents will be the primary tools used to realize the vision and goals outlined in the ICSP. The implementation plan outlines a number of actions that will require a review of the MPS and the LUB.

It is important to ensure that citizens, council, and the various stakeholders have access to the most up-to-date information regarding the Planning Review update process. A variety of communication strategies, including municipal and community newsletters, press releases and this website, will keep residents informed on the process.
