Vermi-composting is basically composting with special worms - red wigglers to be exact!
Keeping your worms happy isn't too difficult. They need:
- a home - like a plastic or wooden bin with plenty of air holes punched in the sides and lid as well as in the bottom for drainage.
- bedding - topsoil. shredded newspaper softened in water, or a mixture of sawdust, peat, shredded leaves and soil. Keep it damp.
- food - bury your leftovers in bedding. They like fruits and vegetables (cooked or raw), bread, pasta, coffee grounds, etc.
Fill your bin, feed your worms regularly and maintain a good moisture level. Soon, you will have "castings" to use in your flower beds or garden. Castings produced by red wigglers are an incredibly rich fertilizer that looks like fine textured soil.
