Efficiency Nova Scotia's Mercury Collection Program

Mercury is a toxic pollutant that can threaten our environment, wildlife and human health.

By recycling mercury containing products, we can help reduce the amount of mercury polluting our environment.

In conjunction with Efficiency Nova Scotia, the Municipality of Chester will be accepting mercury containing items at the Kaizer Meadow Environmental Management Centre, free of charge. To learn more about this program, please click here.

ACCEPTABLE ITEMS:

  • Business lighting (CFLs, fluomeric lamp, fluorescent tubes [T5, T8, T12], fluorescent U-tubes)
  • Residential lighting (CFLs, fluorescent tubes [T5, T8, T12])
  • Thermostats
  • Barometers & vacuum gauges
  • Button cell batteries
  • Flame sensor (e.g. gas range)
  • Float switches
  • Flowmeters
  • Household, industrial & labratory thermometers
  • Hydrometres
  • Hygrometers/psychrometers
  • Loose liquid mercury
  • Manometers
  • Medical devices
  • Pressure switches
  • Pyrometers
  • Relays
  • Sphygmomanometers

NON-ACCEPTABLE ITEMS:

The Household Hazardous Waste Depot is located at Kaizer Meadow Environmental Management Centre. It is open to all residents of the Municipality during regular hours (Monday - Saturday, 8 A.M until 4 P.M.).

Many products we use are hazardous and should not be thrown in the garbage. They can be harmful to the waste collector when included in the regular stream of curbside waste. Kaizer Meadow gladly accepts all labelled, residential, household hazardous waste as long as it's in a non-leaking container.

paint commercial, industrial and institutional waste
herbicides and pesticides biomedical waste
cleaners and bleaches excessive amounts of material
wood preservatives compressed gas cylinders (oxygen, helium, etc.)
fluorescent lights, including CFL flares (take to RCMP)
solvents, varnishes, stains and thinners ammunition (take to RCMP)
used oils and transmission fluids  
batteries  
empty and full aerosol containers  
fire extinguishers  

Bringing Waste to Kaizer Meadow

Kaizer Meadow Environmental Management Centre is located at 450 Kaizer Meadow Road, Sherwood, just off Route 14.

Hours of operation are Monday to Saturday from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

 

All types of waste can be brought to Kaizer Meadow Environmental Management Centre.

  • Municipal solid waste
  • Compostable material
  • Yard waste
  • Blue bag recyclables and recyclable paper
  • Contaminated soil
  • Construction and demolition material (C & D)
  • Large appliances, including refrigerators
  • Tires
  • Household hazardous waste

If you are a resident of the Municipality of Chester, you are permitted to bring up to 1,500 lbs of waste to the Landfill per trip, free of charge. If you are a contractor, please click here for our tipping fee schedule. New contractors are required to complete a form upon arriving at the Scale House for the first time.

  1. Drive up to the Scale House window to be weighed;
  2. Proceed to the Public Drop Off area; or if permitted, to other areas specific to your load (shingle or C & D pile or landfill);
  3. Unload your waste;
  4. Drive back to the Scale House window to be weighed again;
  5. Pay your bill (Debit or Visa only) or receive an invoice for later billing.
